Faculty - Day One FAQs

Day One Program

Welcome to Davidson College's Day One program, designed to provide affordable access to required course materials for all students. This innovative program allows students to access digital course materials on the first day of class, ensuring they have the resources they need to succeed at a reduced cost.

Day One also benefits faculty by providing access to real-time data on student engagement to improve student outcomes. By offering a more affordable and accessible solution to course materials, we aim to enhance the educational experience for all Davidson College students.

How it works

The program starts with faculty members selecting the course materials for their courses. Once the materials are selected, the Davidson College Store partners with publishers or vendors to negotiate a discounted price.

When a student registers for a class that utilizes the Day One program, the materials are made available to students before or on the first day of class, and a course material charge is placed on their student account.

Benefits for Students:

  • Access to course materials on the first day of class, increasing their ability to prepare and engage in their studies.

  • Cost savings, as the Day One program will offer course materials at a lower cost than traditional methods.

  • Use financial aid to cover the cost of textbooks.

  • Increased success rates and improved academic performance due to timely and easy access to course materials.

Benefits for Faculty:

  • Access to a range of digital tools to enhance instruction and improve student engagement

  • Reduced administrative burden through the program's support services and management of course materials

  • Opportunity to customize course materials to meet specific teaching and learning needs

FAQs

What steps do I need to complete to ensure students are able to access their course materials on day one of each term?

Step 1: Submit the correct course material adoption information for each course you are teaching ASAP

Step 2: Add the Day One link to your course in Moodle (See how to below)

Step 3: Make sure your courseware such as Cengage Mindtap, Pearson Mylabs, or Mcgraw-Hill Connect has been integrated within a Moodle module.

Step 4: Add this information to your syllabus

"When you registered for this course, you purchased the course materials at an exclusive low price. Once classes begin, you automatically gain immediate access to these materials in Moodle. If you decide to opt out, you will not be able to access the materials in Moodle anymore, and you might end up paying a higher price elsewhere for the same materials. If you have any questions, visit the Day One FAQ page at DavidsonCollegeStore.com. You may also email us at storeorders@davidson.edu.

Step 5: Discuss the Day One program on the first day of classes with your students

How are course materials delivered in the Day One Program?

  • eBook: Students and Faculty will click the Read Now button after selecting the Day One link within the course to view their eBook. Faculty will continue entering additional information to receive their free sample copy.

  • Publisher Link (Codeless Delivery): Students will use their publisher link within Moodle to receive their course materials and only use the Day One link in Moodle for opting out/in. Faculty will integrate the publisher's link within a Moodle module as usual for students to access their course materials.

  • Access Code: Faculty can integrate the publisher's link within Moodle or on the publisher's website for students to access their course materials. Students will click the Reveal Access Code button after selecting the “Day One” link within the course to receive their access code. Students will paste their access code into the publisher's link within Moodle or on the publisher's website to receive their course materials.

  • Physical Book: Students will pick up their physical book at the DSC Bookstore or go to the Day One Physical Course Material Shipping and In Store Pickup to Ship or Select In-store Pickup.

Can you explain the changes to linking the Day One link in Moodle?

As we evolve Day One to the campus as a whole, we have been working on ways to expedite it within each course with the least room for misunderstanding or error.   We are confident that a Day One link within the Course Resources Navbar link in each course will be the best solution going forward.

This Course Resources Navbar link provides access to Day One for faculty and students alike across campus come Spring 2025. The professor will continue to activate their textbooks by engaging the link first, after which students will have access. Please note that access to the textbook is not immediate and will populate after a brief period.

Please NOTE:

•    The professor must adopt their textbook through the bookstore prior to it being available for use in a course and preferable before the first day of class.

•    The “Course Resources” Navbar link must be present in every course along with Course Home and Content Navbar links. If designing a different Navbar layout, please do NOT remove these three links.

•    The Day One textbook will not be available for students use until the professor has connected a textbook to the course. Also, the connection from the professor may have a latency period before being available – usually about an hour.

How do I connect the Day One link to my course in Moodle?

Professors, to connect the textbook to a course after adopting a book through the bookstore, select "Course Resources" and then "Day One" from the navbar links. Students will also use the “Day One” link within “Course Resources” to access their textbook. Selecting "Read Now" will present your textbook material.

Step 1: Navigate to your course page in Moodle and then enable Edit mode (toggle in the upper right corner).

Step 2: At the bottom of the section where you want the link, click the Add Activity ("+") button and select Activity or Resource.

Step 3From the Activity Chooser, select VitalSource LTI 1.3 to open the New External Tool window.

Step 4In the New External Tool window, click Select content to open the Select content window and connect to VitalSource.

Step 4In the New External Tool window, click Select content to open the Select content window and connect to VitalSource.
